Western Digital's latest generation of high-performance Enhanced IDE (EIDE) hard drives incorporate Data Lifeguard, an exclusive new feature that automatically detects, isolates, and repairs problem areas on the hard drive before data loss can occur. This self-healing feature works in the background to actively guard data whenever the system is on. Using the industry-recognized 3.5-inch, low-profile WD Caviar design, the drives incorporate leading-edge magnetoresistive head technology to meet increasing capacity requirements. Read and write elements in the MR head are separate in order to optimize read and write capabilities. The read element, composed of a thin-film material whose resistance changes in the presence of a magnetic field, produces a strong signal, allowing significant increases in areal densities.
